Lions, Panthers, Eagles and Sharks earn MHYBL crowns


MOUNT HOPE — The Mount Hope Youth Basketball League crowned four 2013-14 champions Saturday at the Mount Hope Community Center.

In Grades 1-2, the Lions posted a 26-22 triumph over the Tigers.

The Panthers defeated the Mavericks 26-19 for the title in Grades 3-4.

In Grades 5-6, the Eagles slipped by the Wildcats 24-22.

And, in Grades 7-8, the Sharks emerged victorious with a 39-29 verdict over the Hornets.

Spectators were also treated to a coaches game, won 68-63 by the Gold over the Blue.

Following is a review of each championship contest:



Grades 1-2

Lions 26

Tigers 22


The Lions used an 8-2 second-quarter run to provide enough cushion for the victory over the Tigers. The Lions were unbeaten for the season.

Lions — Elijah Redfern 26

Tigers — Braydon Hawthorne 15, Kaydon Lyons 4, Mikey Spack 2, Leiloni Manns 1



Grades 3-4

Panthers 26

Mavericks 19


The Panthers built up a 24-12 cushion through three quarters and held off a rally bid from the Mavericks to conclude an undefeated campaign.

Panthers — Caleb Austin 10, Cade Maynor 6, Joshua Farnsworth 4, Dylan Osborne 4, Max Underwood 2

Mavericks — Davion Parker 11, Ryan Adkins 8



Grades 5-6

Eagles 24

Wildcats 22


A back-and-forth battle ended with the Eagles outscoring the Wildcats 16-12 in the final period to win the championship as the No. 3 seed.

Wildcats — Darian McDowell 13, Raizon Wells 9



Grades 7-8

Sharks 39

Hornets 29


A 19-9 advantage in the opening quarter allowed the Sharks to keep the Hornets at bay for the title.

Coaches

Gold 68

Blue 63


The Gold squad led 39-32 at halftime but the Blue had a 13-0 run to assume a 45-39 lead. However, the Gold rallied as both teams ran out of gas.
