Concord stays in playoff hunt

On the heels of a 9-3 overtime win over the University of Charleston Saturday, the Concord University football team has been slotted 10th in the initial Super Region One rankings, the NCAA announced Monday.

The top six teams in each of the four “Super Regions” at the end of the season will earn berths in the 2013 NCAA Division II playoffs.

Through eight games, Concord is 6-2 overall and 5-1 in Mountain East Conference games. The Mountain Lions have won their last two games and are currently tied with Urbana for second place in the conference behind first-place Shepherd.

West Chester (8-0) is ranked first in Super Region One followed in the Top 6 by Shepherd (7-0), Bloomsburg (8-0), Winston-Salem State (7-1), Slippery Rock (7-1) and Virginia State (7-1).

Stonehill (6-2), California (Pa.) (6-2), Urbana (6-2) and Concord (6-2) round out the region’s Top 10.

In last weekend’s action, Calvinaugh Jones’ 12-yard touchdown run in the second overtime proved to be the difference in Concord’s defeat of host Charleston.

Charleston outgained Concord 288-198 and held the Mountain Lions to just nine yards passing in the game.

Both teams missed field goals in the first overtime, and Jones put CU up with his TD. Following a missed extra point, Charleston got the ball down to the 1-yard line, but was pushed back 10 yards on an option, and then was intercepted on the final play of the game.

For CU, former Mount Hope standout Davon Marion had eight assists on the defensive side of the ball.

Concord will look to keep its playoff hopes alive with a victory Saturday against UVa.-Wise. Kickoff at Callaghan Stadium in Athens is scheduled for 2 p.m.
