Golden Bear women raise mark to 10-11

MONTGOMERY — Last-minute defensive heroics propelled the WVU Tech Golden Bear women to a 64-61 conquest Monday of former Mid-South Conference foe University of Pikeville.

After Tech increased its lead to 10 in the second half, Pikeville answered with a 7-0 run to bring the contest to 33-30 with 15:50 remaining. The teams battled the remainder of the contest before WVU Tech’s Amber Tully and Cheyanna Lusk made some crucial late free throws down the stretch.

The contest featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes.

 “I thought we did a great job overcoming some early diversity that we have been having with some of our defensive matchups,” said Tech coach Jenna Everhart. “Our team did a great job recognizing what we needed to do and getting stops

“Rebounding has been a big thing for us this year, and we did a great job on getting to the boards. I’d like to commend our seniors, Amber [Tully], Amy [Gardner], and Courtney [Sturdivant], for their effort.”

Tully led the Golden Bears with 24 points — 18 by way of 3-point goals — and eight rebounds as she moved to within nine points of the 1,000-point scoring plateau. Roche Wimberly recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The first half was a low-scoring affair. Fueled by a 5-0 run, Pikeville led 13-8 lead after a Callisha Johnson 3-pointer.

Tech later regained the lead, 28-23, behind three consecutive 3-pointers by Nia Nolan and Tully.

In improving to 10-11, the Golden Bears swept the season series from Pikeville (5-15).
