Fayetteville cheerleaders making sixth trip to state tournament

FAYETTEVILLE — For the sixth straight year, the Fayetteville Pirates will be in the state cheerleading tournament field this weekend.

The Pirates were runners-up to Tug Valley (last year’s Class AA champion) in the Class A Region 3 qualifier in November.

“I’m very excited,” said Jamie Spearen, Fayetteville’s senior captain and a three-year team member. “We have a tumbling weakness this year, so I was really kind of nervous going into the regionals.

“It’s exciting to be going back to the states again. It’s a good experience.”

Spearen was pleased with her team’s runner-up Region 3 effort.

“We performed great; I was really proud of the girls,” she said. “We have a lot of new freshmen that really stepped up.”

About this weekend’s competition, she said, “I’m just looking forward to having fun. As long as the girls go out there and give me their all, I’ll be satisfied.”

“We are so proud of these girls,” said coach Edie Davis. “They’ve worked really hard.

“Please come and support us on Saturday, Dec. 8.”

The Class A portion of the competition starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the other classifications.

Fayetteville will be performing second out of eight squads. The other single-A teams include Wheeling Central, Tug Valley, South Harrison, Moorefield, Williamstown, Tyler Consolidated and Wahama.

Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for students.

Nitro High School’s Kathy Barr will receive special recognition from the WVSSAC as coach of the year.
