Sales of banquet tickets for the celebration dinner in conjunction with the 100th boys state high school basketball tournament next week will end today. The banquet will be held on March 12.
Individual tickets are priced at $35 while a reserve table for 10 will cost $400. The goal of the banquet is to create a reunion for teams and individuals that have competed in previous state tournaments.
Everyone purchasing tickets will receive a complimentary pictorial book highlighting the last 100 years of boys basketball.
Among the banquet speakers will be Dave Barksdale, Jeff Schneider, Ergie Smith, Warren Baker, Bob Burton and Pat C. Fragile.
WVSSAC personnel and volunteers have been hard at work for several months preparing for the banquet and the tournament.
In addition to the pictorial memory book, tables will be located in the Civic Center lobby for schools wishing to display items such as trophies, uniforms, scrapbooks, programs and newspaper articles. They will be displayed as follows: Class A (Wednesday), Class AA (Thursday) and Class AAA (Friday). Schools are responsible for these items. Also, an action video will be created to show during the banquet and on TV monitors in the Civic Center during the tournament.
The 100th boys tournament will be directed by Valley High principal Lee Loy.
“I’m looking forward to it,” said Loy.
“Getting to be the director of the state tournament is an honor, and to be able to do it for the 100th tournament is a major honor. I’ve enjoyed every one of the tournaments I’ve been part of.
“There have been some great people to work with.”
“I’d like to give thanks to my superintendent (Keith Butcher) for allowing me the time to go down there,” Loy added.
Loy will be assisted by Doug Hougue and Bill Gillispie.
