FAYETTEVILLE — The 3rd annual Big Family Fun Variety Show, sponsored by the Fayetteville Arts Coalition and the Historic Fayette Theater, is set for Saturday June 1 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Historic Fayette Theater in Fayetteville.

Some changes are in store at the show, but the entertainment value won’t be one of them.

“We used to call it a talent show but the word ‘talent’ scares people off,” event organizer Maura Kistler said earlier this year.

To encourage more variety, organizers this year are offering a prize in each of three categories, including Freshest Talent, Biggest Laughs, and Most Original.

Other changes include the prizes. This year, instead of receiving money, category winners will receive locally produced art or crafts. “We feel this is a great way to reinforce our mission which is to support local artists and craftsmen,” said FAC president Janet Proctor.

Fayetteville pizzeria Pies and Pints is once again sponsoring the People’s Choice Award for which everyone in the audience with a cell phone will be able to vote. The winning act will receive $150 cash and $150 in gift cards. “This feel-good evening is quintessentially Fayette County and we are happy to support a community event that encourages families to have fun together,” Pies and Pints owner Kim Shingledecker said.

The Historic Fayette Theater is located at 115 South Court Street, Fayetteville.
