The Register-Herald is asking local photographers to submit photos for its Amateur Photo Contest.
The entry deadline is June 28, and Register-Herald photojournalist Rick Barbero urges those interested to submit photos of anything they would like.
“We have a lot of really good professional and amateur photographers in our area,” Barbero said. “The main purpose behind getting this exhibit up and going was to showcase all the amazing talent that’s right here in our backyard.”
After all of the entries are reviewed, an in-house panel of judges will select four finalists, whose work will be printed on canvas and displayed in The Register-Herald gallery, along with the Southern West Virginia Professional Photographers Exhibit.
The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lobby at The Register-Herald.
The exhibit displays work from eight professional photographers, including Barbero, Steve Brightwell, Andrea Martin, Ed Rehbein, Jenny Harnish, Tim Tilley, Perry Bennett, and Tom Hindman.
“It’s kind of neat to have your photos displayed,” Barbero said. “For some, this could be their first time seeing their work displayed alongside of a professional photographer.”
One finalist will be chosen by the panel to win a Judges’ Choice Award, which is a cash prize of $200. Finalists will also be voted on by the public — either online or by stopping by The Register-Herald office at 801 N. Kanawha St. in Beckley — for a Peoples’ Choice Award, which is a cash prize of $100.
Finalists will also have the option to sell their work.
All entries must be submitted to RHPhotoContest@gmail.com in high resolution JPEG format (minimum resolution of 300 dpi inches wide, 3,000 pixels, for horizontal and 8 inches for vertical, 2,400 pixels).
