ANSTED — Last week Fayette County Schools repaired several small sections of roof at Ansted Elementary School to stop water leaks, confirmed David Keffer, director of operations.
He said the roof was leaking over a portion of the gymnasium and at least one classroom.
School Treasurer Paula Fridley said the repaired areas totaled about the size of one classroom and cost $14,000.
She said the roof was dry and brittle from age, and local maintenance crews could not walk on the roof to repair leaks without causing more damage.
Under the current Comprehensive Educational Facilities Plan, the elementary school is slated to close and the existing Ansted Middle is to become Ansted Elementary.
Ansted Middle students are expected to merge with Fayetteville students, sixth through eighth, at the existing Fayetteville High School.
Even if the bond were to pass, Ansted Elementary students would still be housed in the existing elementary school for at least two more years, necessitating the repairs, said Keffer.
