The Fayette County Farmers Market Association will host an all-day hoophouse/high tunnel-raising workshop on Saturday, Nov. 21 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Southern Appalachian Labor School (SALS) in Beards Fork. At the workshop you can learn to build a simple, low-cost, walk-in greenhouse structure that will allow to you to garden all winter long.

During the workshop, participants will hear from about hoophouse designs and uses and will help construct a real 40-feet x 15-feet hoophouse. The workshop will feature Dr. Lewis Jett of WVU Extension Service, an expert in hoophouse-based production. As an added bonus, the efforts of those in attendance at the workshop will result in a final product that will be used by SALS for community education and the school’s new youth gardening education program.

Some Fayette County residents who pledge to sell season-extended produce at the Fayette County Farmers Market may qualify to apply for a competitive grant of greenhouse materials after the workshop. Competition details and applications will be provided at the event.

Lunch will be provided by SALS. Please RSVP to so that plans can be made to accomodate all those in attendance.
