SCARBRO — New River Health has received grant funding to provide after-school services at the following sites:

* New River Elementary,

* Mount Hope Elementary,

* Gauley Bridge Elementary, and

* Southern Appalachian Labor School (SALS).

New River Health will partner with the Fayette County Board of Education to provide after-school services to the students in Fayette County. The funding for this project is provided through the West Virginia Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. The emphasis for the after-school program will be on the four curriculum standards: academics, physical fitness, social and emotional health.

The programs will begin in October and will run 3-4 days each week. There will be various enrichment programs for students to choose from as well as general tutoring in math and reading. Enrollment packets will be sent home with students by the end of September. Parents are encouraged to complete the enrollment forms and return them to the school as soon as possible so their children may be eligible to participate in the after-school program.

New River Health (NRH) is a federally qualified community health center that has been providing health services in Fayette and surrounding counties for over 30 years. NRH currently operates five community health centers as well as seven school-based health centers that serve nine schools in Fayette and Nicholas counties.

Anyone with questions about the after-school programs should contact Anthony Canada at 304-469-3345 ext 3322 or anthony.canada@pihn.org.
