Energy Express is rolling down the tracks to Fayette County picking up kids interested in a summer of fun.
This free 6-week reading program starts June 17. Children entering first through sixth grades in the fall have an opportunity to hop on board Energy Express.
Children can sign up for either the SALS site in Beards Fork or the Scarbro Head Start site in Scarbro. A few spots are available at each site. The limit is 40 kids at each site. You can still register your child by calling Fayette County Extension Office, 304-574-4253, as soon as possible.
Daily schedule starts with breakfast around 8:30 a.m. Children participate in reading, writing and creative art projects. There’s some time for activities and play outdoors, then the day concludes with lunch.
SALS offers transportation to and from Oak Hill/Fayetteville area and the Gauley Bridge/Valley area.
Scarbro offers a $2/day reimbursement for parents who drive children to their site. Children must attend a minimum of 15 days for parents to receive this travel reimbursement.
The 6-week program concludes July 26. Children are encouraged to attend every day to maximize improvement in their reading skills.
Parents and members of the community are encouraged to volunteer to help. You can volunteer for an hour or two, to read to or with a child. Volunteer for an entire morning, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and help wherever needed. Volunteer for extended times, several days, a week, for all six weeks. If you wish to volunteer, please call the Fayette County Extension Office at 304-574-4253. Volunteers will need to have a background check before helping at either site.
Don’t miss out on this summer program. Register your child today.
