Chris Rowe

Meadow Bridge’s Chris Rowe will lead his team into the postseason Tuesday.

Midland Trail’s 66-58 victory over PikeView Friday enabled the Patriots to take an 18-3 record and a 12-game winning streak into postseason play beginning tonight at Greenbrier West.

That will mean little to senior Bo Kesler and his teammates if they can’t keep piling up the wins in the second season.

Kesler, a guard who averages about 16.5 points a game for the Class A No. 7 Patriots, says he was “fairly pleased” with Trail’s play this season. “We’ve played pretty solid; we just haven’t played the best we can play,” he said. “We still have that game (remaining) where we all five click.”

Trail will have its hands full in the sectional, Kesler says. The Pats defeated Greenbrier West and Richwood twice in the regular season, but haven’t faced Pocahontas. “We’re confident, but we still have to play,” he stressed. “Any of those teams have the ability to get hot and make a run.”

Kesler says the main key for the Patriots’ success has been teamwork. “We all work well together. All of us want to win, not look for numbers.”

Also this week, other county teams commence sectional play.

Class AA Oak Hill, 13-8 before Saturday’s game with Bluefield, will face Webster County Tuesday, with the winner meeting Braxton Co. Friday for the sectional crown at Summersville. The Devils didn’t face Webster and halved two-point decisions with Braxton.

“We just have to play hard, play well,” said coach Fred Ferri Jr. “We have to do things right.”

In Class A, Mount Hope (14-7) will meet MSU Academy Tuesday. Coach Jim Maynor says the Mustangs have been banged up (one of his top scorers, Davon Marion, missed a couple of games due to a pulled muscle, and B.J. Wallace and Bryan Allen also have been hampered), but he says the team should be ready to go this week.

Meadow Bridge (14-6) will compete with Mercer Christian, Big Creek and Montcalm. The Wildcats are led by senior Chris Rowe’s 18.5 average through 18 games.

In Region 6, both sections will stage their finals Friday night at Shady Spring Middle.

“We hope it’s an exciting tourney atmosphere,” said Meadow Bridge coach Ed McCall.

Fayetteville, which gained a little momentum with a three-point win over Meadow Bridge Friday, will meet Valley Tuesday in its opener. Valley itself has some momentum, winning four straight to close the regular season after struggling through a six-game losing streak.

The winner faces No. 3 Charleston Catholic.
