Golfers can take their pick from two charity golf tournaments in the area on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The third annual Shop With A Cop Golf Tournament will be held at Bridge Haven Golf Course, and the first Patriot Golf Classic will be held at Hawks Nest State Park Golf Course.

The Shop With A Cop event is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police. Proceeds from the annual event allow the FOP to give 100 local children $100 each to spend at Wal-Mart around Christmas time.

“It’s a labor of love,” explained Oak Hill Police Chief Mike Whisman. “They do a good job with it.”

The FOP tournament, a four-man scramble, will begin at 8 a.m. at Bridge Haven. Entry is $40 per person or $160 for a team. “We’ll take as many teams as show up,” says Whisman.

There will be a variety of door prizes and raffles, in addition to a 50-50 drawing. Also, each of the four Par-3 holes will have prizes, including a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one on one of the holes, courtesy of Roy’s Loans.

Meanwhile, the Midland Trail High School golf team is organizing the Patriot Golf Classic, a four-man captain’s choice scramble set to begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start the same day at Hawks Nest. If enough teams show interest, an afternoon tee time will be set up.

Entry fee is $160 per team. The fee will cover 18 holes of golf, cart, food, beverages and the chance to win prizes.

Pre-purchase mulligans are available for $5 each (limit one per player).

Part of the proceeds will go to support the school’s first-ever golf team.
