CHARLESTON — No. 1 Webster County capped a perfect 28-0 season with a 47-40 verdict over Parkersburg Catholic in the Class A championship game at the WVSSAC Boys State Basketball Tournament Saturday at the Charleston Coliseum.

Later in the day, Chapmanville Regional captured its second straight Class AA trophy with a 60-46 conquest of Fairmont Senior. And, University concluded the evening with a 51-45 triumph over previously-unbeaten Martinsburg to earn its first boys state basketball championship.

Dorian Groggs tallied 21 points to pace the Webster County effort. The senior took charge in the fourth period, scoring 12 straight points to allow the Highlanders to transform a 36-30 deficit into a 42-36 lead with 2:53 to play. The Crusaders crept to within two, 42-40, on a pair of free throws from Ty Sturm, but Groggs hit two more freebies and teammate Tyler Gray went 3-of-4 from the stripe to seal the triumph before a large, vocal Webster County contingent.

Drew Holcomb contributed 12 points and nine rebounds for the Highlanders, who were the Region 3 co-champion.

Sturm had 17 points and 10 boards for Parkersburg Catholic (22-5), and Cade Ullman collected 10 points and six rebounds.

In the double-A game, Chapmanville (26-2) placed four players in double figures in the scoring column for the win. Devin Collins scored 17, Andrew Shull and Philip Mullins netted 13 each, and Obinna Anochili-Killen tallied 12 points. Anochili-Killen also logged 12 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

For Fairmont Senior (26-2), Jalen Bridges supplied 17 points and 11 rebounds, Dasilas Jones had 13 points, and Zyon Dobbs provided seven points, eight assists and three blocked shots.

K.J. McClurg tallied 20 points and Kaden Metheny 15 to power University (24-4) past Martinsburg (27-1) in the big schools title game.

Teddy Marshall scored 17 to guide Martinsburg, and Trey Segar collected eight points and 15 rebounds.
